We started our herb garden yesterday. I also mowed the yard, using my manual mower, and moved the compost heap. The thing about manual mowers is you have to mow frequently. This is the first time I’ve mowed this year and the knee high grass nearly killed me. While I was mowing Meg planted our herb garden. This year we’re attempting three different varieties of Basil.

Web based diagramming software

Continuing in my series on web based productivity tools, I ran accross a new web based (written in flash) diagramming tool: http://Gliffy.com. Similar to visio or dia and includes online storage and collaboration. Exports as SVG, JPG, and PNG. It doesn’t support the visio file format though.

Assorted Melons

Meg made a tremendous pulled pork this weekend, absolutely delicious. While shopping, I noticed a display of “Assorted Melons”. Who can resist a sign like that? I bought three of them and they were delicious. I’m not exactly sure what varieties we had, but here’s my best guess:

1) Seedless icebox watermelon – probably the black diamond variety.
2) Amarillo Oro – very sweet and firm

3) Sweet Barcelona hybrid – sweet green fruit, not at all like a honeydew. My favorite!

If anyone is considering having watermelon for a 4th of july celebration, I say leave those huge relativly tasteless melons at the store and pick up some Assorted Melons.

No, this isn’t a scene from some science fiction movie, this is actually a satelite photo of the worlds 7th tallest building. This building has over 100 floors and 3000 rooms but its only a concrete shell. No windows, fixtures or anything but the concrete was ever completed. Bizarre.

Cheesy Potatoes & Green Beans

Ok, here are the receipes for the stuff I made this weekend. Credit for the Cheesy Potatoes goes to my mom and the green beans I made up, but do have to give Meg credit to introducing me to the shallots. Enjoy!

Cheesy Potatoes:

8-10 potatoes, washed
1/2 loaf velveeta
2/3 stick butter
2-3 strips bacon
1c cheddar, grated

Slice potatoes thinly. Layer bottom of a 9×13 pan with 1/3 of the potatoes. Cut velveeta into slices and place on top of potatoes. Add some salt and pepper. Cover the velveeta with another 1/3 of the potatoes. Cut strips of bacon in half and space them out on top of the potatoes. Cover the bacon with the final 1/3 of the potatoes. Melt butter then pour over the potatoes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Finally, add a layer of grated cheddar on top. Cover and bake at 375 for approximatly 60 minutes or until potatoes are soft and cheese is bubbling.

Green beans:
2-3 Shallots
1-2 cloves of garlic
1lb green beans
Olive oil

Dice the shallots and garlic. Sautee in olive oil until garlic begins to brown. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add approximatly 1c of water and the green beans. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until beans have reached the level of softness you prefer or until the water has boiled off.

Apparently, the idea that lemmings throw themselves off cliffs in great hordes was completely made up by the disney company in the 50s. Who knew? Stupid disney.

Wiki on a stick

I use Wiki’s for all sorts of stuff at work. I think its a great platform for document creation and collaboration. So, my ears perk up whenever I here some buzz about new wiki software. I was reading Lifehacker a few weeks ago and they mentioned the GTD Tiddlywiki, a self contained wiki, written entirely in HTML and Javascript, encapsulated in a single file. Its pretty cool for keeping personal notes and the like. Plus, since its just a single HTML file, it can run (with PortableFirefox ) entirely from a memory stick, hence “wiki on a stick”. I’m experimenting with it now as a daily log type of thing. Its got some fun ajax stuff going on too.
