Wiki on a stick

I use Wiki’s for all sorts of stuff at work. I think its a great platform for document creation and collaboration. So, my ears perk up whenever I here some buzz about new wiki software. I was reading Lifehacker a few weeks ago and they mentioned the GTD Tiddlywiki, a self contained wiki, written entirely in HTML and Javascript, encapsulated in a single file. Its pretty cool for keeping personal notes and the like. Plus, since its just a single HTML file, it can run (with PortableFirefox ) entirely from a memory stick, hence “wiki on a stick”. I’m experimenting with it now as a daily log type of thing. Its got some fun ajax stuff going on too.

Etsy – the handmade market place

I ran accross this earlier today. Its a site for selling handmade goods. Very well organized and easy to use with some cool products. My biggest complaint is that the clothing isn’t browsable by mens and womens styles.

Here’s their brief definition of what Etsy is:

Etsy is an online marketplace for buying and selling all things handmade. Etsy lets you shop by color, place, time and material.

Here’s a couple of screenshots of some cool items:

Very appropriate tee shirt considering the current political climate

Just a cool shirt:

Google office productivity suite?

Ok, so I right before I posted about writely, a friend sent me a link to another upcoming product from google: http://www.google.com/googlespreadsheets/tour1.html . Thats right, not only does google have a web based word processor, they also have a spreadsheet solution. Lets compare:

Microsoft (Commercial)
Open Source (Free)
Google (Free, web based)

MS Office OpenOffice.org Mozilla Google
Word processor Word Writer Writely
Spreadsheet Excel Calc GoogleSpreadsheets
Email client Outlook Thunderbird GMail
Calendar application Outlook Sunbird Calendar
Database Access Base Google Data API*
Presentation Powerpoint Impress
HTML Editor Frontpage Composer Pages

* The google data api isn’t really a full fledged database, just a method for working with data on the web, so this is kind of a stretch.

As you can see, google appears to be well on its way to creating a fully functional suite of tools for office productivity.

Writely as a blog editor

A while back I posted an article in the tools blog of the dev site (http://jesstedder.com/dev/blogs/tools ) a post on writely , a web based, ajax intensive, word processor. It turns out it can be used as an editor for your blog posts as well, I’m actually composing this post using writely and then posting it to my wordpress blog when I’m done. It supports all of the major blogging APIs; the full list is available here. Google recently acquired writely, so registration isn’t open to everyone until google re-releases it to the public. As a pre-existing member I have about 50 invitations I can use to grant others access to the tool. If your interested email me (if you know my address) or post a comment below.

Send in the idiots

I heard an interview on NPR with the author of a new book, _Send in the Idiots_. Its written by an autistic man about 4 of his autistic classmates from grade school and what their lives are like in their mid-twenties. Excellent book. Google notebook

There's a new tool from google that seems very useful so far.  Here's the description from the site ( http://google.com/gn ):

Google Notebook makes web research of all kinds – from planning a vacation to researching a school paper to buying a car – easier and more efficient by enabling you to clip and gather information even while you're browsing the web.

And since Google Notebook lives in your browser, you won't be left with a scattered collection of notes, Word docs, and browser bookmarks to sort through; all your web findings will be gathering into one organized, easy accessible location that you can access from any computer.

Basically it allows you to quickly "clip" portions of the pages you are browsing into your own storage space.  This clips can also be made public.   Heres a quick public notebook I threw together: http://www.google.com/notebook/public/07828021558050844097/BDSQXSwoQ2IbF6bMh .

Another funny video

Another damn funny video.  Will ring true for all the computer nerds out there.
