Rowers in the mist

May 25th, 2007 . by jess

My normal commute route follows eastern ave from delta to Baines where I cut over into friendship park.  Its a nice quite interlude between eastern ave traffic and downtown traffic.  This morning while gliding through the park, I heard voices coming from the river.  At first I thought it might just be an echo from the construction on the other side of the road but then some movement on the water caught my eye.  Suddenly two rowing teams came sliding out of the mist.  I snapped a couple of pictures as quickly as I could, they’re a little fuzzy from distance (the rowers were near the south bank) and the fog on the river.

UPDATE:  According to a friend of mine, this is the UC rowing team, they put in at Schmidt boat launch just off eastern ave, I’ll keep an eye out for them in the future.

Same pic, zoomed in on the rowers:

This has also been Bike To Work Week (check out http://www.cinergize.org/biketoworkweek.html for more info) here in Cincinnati.  I stopped by their booth this morning and was a little disappointed with the turnout; there were only a couple other bikers.  Maybe it was too early, who knows?  Anyway, they had t-shirts for sale so I bought one, check it out:

Eastern Ave Homes

May 21st, 2007 . by jess

I’ve decided to do a series of photos of the homes, both old and new, on eastern ave.  This will be a subset of my “Snapshots from the bike” series.  Eastern ave is undergoing massive re-development right now.  There are half million dollar homes  and condos being built along side very dilapidated multi-family buildings.  Many of the older buildings are home to a population the Enquirer euphemistically calls “Appalachian immigrants”.  I’ll try to keep a good balance between the new development and the old, and also plot the pix on a google earth map (link to come).  For now, here’s a pic of some of the new townhomes near downtown, where I think they’re now calling eastern ave “Riverside Drive”:

All the eastern ave pictures will be available here:

Bike Lexington

May 21st, 2007 . by jess

Bike Lexington was this weekend.  We met mom and shane for the fun ride.  Had a great time and even passed some of the kids with training wheels on.

oh, that lovely hissing sound

May 10th, 2007 . by jess

So yesterday, I biked to work, then to our office for an interview.  After the interview I left, made my way through all the Reds traffic and through friendship park.  The ride home is a piece of cake after that.  I’m pulling onto Eastern Ave paying way too much attention to traffic and not enough to the road I guess, because I dropped my rear wheel into a storm drain, nearly ripped the tire off the wheel, and bent the rim so that it will barely turn.  It was a wonderful moment.  Thankfully, Meg was able to take some time away from Dance Dance Revolution to come pick me up.  I’ll try to get it fixed over the weekend and continue my pedal powered commuting adventures next week.

USS Nightmare

May 1st, 2007 . by jess

Meg and I ran across this scary looking barge while taking a stroll on the bike path down by the school on stilts, also known as the Riverview East Academy.  Even though this barge looks like its about to sink, apparently its still seaworthy (river worthy?) and is a halloween attraction.

Green thumb?

April 30th, 2007 . by jess

We started our herb garden yesterday.  I also mowed the yard, using my manual mower, and moved the compost heap.  The thing about manual mowers is you have to mow frequently.  This is the first time I’ve mowed this year and the knee high grass nearly killed me.  While I was mowing Meg planted our herb garden.  This year we’re attempting three different varieties of Basil.

Here’s a pic of some thyme:

Rain, rain, go away

April 26th, 2007 . by jess

Its been raining here for the last couple of days, so I haven’t been riding into work.  I have a rain cape, but don’t have fenders or rain pants yet so I’m reluctant to give it a shot in my work clothes when there’s water on the road.  Anyway - here’s a pic of the underside of I275, near Milford, OH from the bike trail.  We rode up there last weekend.

Downtown Cincinnati - across the water

April 25th, 2007 . by jess

Here’s a shot I took yesterday from the Schmidt boat launch. Its the skyline of Cincinnati, seen across the bend in the river from the East End.

Bike Commute Route

April 24th, 2007 . by jess

I’ve made no secret that I’m a huge google fan.  A few weeks ago they added a feature to google maps that allows you to annotate, mark, and save your own maps.  I created one of my commuting route here.

Fog on the river

April 24th, 2007 . by jess

I have to admit, fog scares me a little when biking, but this morning most of it had dissipated by the time I hit the road.  Here’s a fun shot of the river with some fog hovering over the surface:
